Mr. Editor:—Would it not be proper for every citizen subject to militia duty, in this place, to take into consideration the propriety of paying more attention to the efficiency of volunteer associations.
At present we have but two fully organized, and two more in a forward state, neither with their full number. The uniform in either is not expensive, and one might be raised, the uniform not to exceed one dollar and a half. I mean such as was worn by the late "Alexandria Lafayette Light Infantry," (and a neater and more efficient company never existed in Alexandria.) As our Government does not support standing armies to protect us, to whom have we to look, but to those associations, for protection, in case of an unexpected invasion of an enemy? Surely you would not think of calling out the undisciplined militia?
I have merely hinted at the subject and hope some abler pen will take it up, and in a short time our town will have a large number of efficient citizen soldiers.

Main Argument
citizens should prioritize improving volunteer militia associations for protection against invasion, given the lack of standing armies, by organizing more companies with inexpensive uniforms similar to the alexandria lafayette light infantry.
