NAVY.—According to Steel's list for July, 1811, the British Navy consists of 1049 vessels of war of various descriptions: 318 are at sea, and 719 in commission: in ordinary and repairing 261: 101 of these are in the American seas, viz. at Halifax, Newfoundland, the West Indies, and South America. Besides which she is building 62!!! From this statement, our readers may derive a wholesome lesson: and those who think extract stronger confirmation for their opinion of the madness, wickedness, or folly of attempting to build a permanent navy in the United States: the English navy is composed in part of the following vessels, taken from other nations:

From the French 109
Danish 49
Spanish 27
Dutch 18
Maltese 3
Total 276

Now, if we had 100 ships of the line, (which God forbid we ever should have,) how long could we retain them? Most of those who talk about a navy, we suppose either do not calculate, or else they wish to prevent proper resistance on the proper element. Bal. Whig.
