Full Text
It is of little consequence to the federalists, that their enemies are less numerous than themselves, while the shameful fact exists that they make themselves more powerful by superior boldness, address and activity. In how many instances have we not seen them gain an ascendancy merely by perseverance in their endless arts of lying and intrigue, and for want of a due exertion of honest means on the part of the friends to government. It is not hazarding too much to say, that a continued prevalence of that luke-warmness and indolence of temper, which has so long excited the reproach of the federal party, must in the end prove the means of its destruction.
What our enemies want in numbers, they make up in the most active intrigue ; and what they want in manly spirit, they make up by dark and underhanded conspiracy.
They are Jeffersons in cowardice as they are Catalines in villany. But the coward has his weapon, and often strikes the surest and most fatal blow.
