Church And Center Programs Planned
The first peacetime Memorial Day since 1941 will be observed in Greenbelt on Sunday, May 26, with church services and a community program. Worship at the Community Church at 11 a. m., and a formal program at the Center at 3 p. m. will keynote Memorial Day commemoration.
The Reverend Eric T. Braund has extended a special invitation to all service men and women, veterans and veterans' organizations to participate in the traditional church service. The membership of the American Legion Post 136 and the Women's Auxiliary have been asked to assemble at the auditorium before the service in order to enter with the color bearers, Vernon T. Fox, Sergeant Austin R. Green, Marine Lieutenant Edward C. Kaighn, Jr., Mrs. Carl Jernberg and Mrs. John Cooper. Members of the American Veterans Committee and Girl Scouts also plan to attend in a body.
In the afternoon program, arranged by the Legion Post and the Town of Greenbelt, the Community band under direction of Dana Garrett will open the observances with a thirty minute concert followed by the Advancing of the Colors by the Legion and Auxiliary color-bearers. Commander Frank H. Riley will then voice a tribute to veterans of all wars. After the welcome address by Mayor George Bauer, Town Manager Gobbel will introduce the guest speaker, the Reverend Eric T. Braund. Additional selections by the band, the Roll Call of the Deceased Veterans and the Returning of the Colors will complete the program.
Stands will be erected at the center for the afternoon program and programs will be distributed.
