Life Is Cheap' But Probation Dear
SACRAMENTO. Mar. 29 (UP)-
County Probation Officer C. E. Wilson today considered the application for probation of John Allk, 46, Lodi, convicted by Superior Judge R. T. Coughlin of hit-run driving.
Allk allegedly had said after running down and injuring Dale Fogel, 17-year-old high school student, "Life is cheap-anyway it would cost me money if I wrecked my car."
Highway Patrolman Andy Mercer said the Lodi rancher had the choice of striking Fogel or hitting another car. Mercer testified that Allk admitted striking Fogel and driving on without stopping.
Allk, on the witness stand, told Judge Coughlin he made the statement attributed to him "in fun," had stopped his car to ask Fogel if he were hurt, and receiving a negative answer, had driven on.
