IMPORTANT FROM FRANCE.

The New York Courier and Enquirer, containing extracts from London and Paris journals up to the 17th ult., was received yesterday by express.

It appears that the King of France has recalled his Minister, Mr. Serurier, and notified Mr. Livingston that his passports were prepared, in case he should desire them.

We learn from the same source that upon receiving the President's message such was the excitement that the Chambers adjourned. The Moniteur gives notice that the question of indemnity would be submitted on the next day, to save the honor of the King who was pledged to bring it before the Chambers, and leaves it to be inferred that it will be rejected instanter.

If this intelligence be correct, and we cannot doubt it, the only hope of avoiding a French war rests on the effect to be produced on the French Chambers by the proceedings of the Senate, and upon the wisdom, firmness, and moderation of Congress.

We hear on all sides, the question “Will there be war?” We cannot believe that there will be, because, if the news from France be true, it still leaves the question of war or peace with us and this revives the consideration of the question in issue between us and France. Our national honor is not, as has been erroneously assumed, involved—it is simply a question of indemnity, of the payment of a debt. Our institutions look to peace, and situated as the nations of Europe now are, to say nothing of our own peculiar condition, a war would be the greatest calamity—indeed no one is interested in provoking hostilities but that corps of official dependents who look to the patronage of the Executive.
