Full Text
Probability of passage this year of Congressman Sanborn's bill which would provide for loans to persons in Alaska and the continental United States who acquire farms by means of homestead entry on public lands became strengthened last week when the Senate Agriculture and Forestry Committee reported the measure favorably to the Senate. The lower house passed the bill in May.
At the present time funds or credit are available under the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act to farmers but the law does not consider homesteaders as farmers for loan purposes, a situation that the Idaho Congressman's bill would remedy. Loans to homesteaders in the States and Alaska would be made under the terms of the bill on the security of mortgage contracts creating liens against land prior to the time the settlers obtain title to the land.
Delegate Bartlett sponsored a bill early this session providing these benefits for Alaska homesteaders but its enactment will not be necessary if the Sanborn bill becomes law.
