On the 21st inst. a woman named Rebecca
M'Kinley, was brought before the
mayor, of Philadelphia, upon the charge
of attempting to kill her husband, at his
residence in the neighborhood of Thir-
teenth and Broad-streets.

It appeared from the confessions of the
woman, that her husband had been in the
habit of beating her in a most shocking
manner, and on Sunday last, he had
beaten her violently, though she was within
a few weeks of her confinement. On
his attempting to renew his brutality, the
wife said "if you strike me again, I will
defend myself with a knife." He rushed
upon her; she seized a knife, and held it
in the direction of her husband covering
her eyes with her hand. He rushed upon
her and received the knife in his side.—
It was found on examining his body at
the hospital, whither he was conveyed,
that an important artery had been severed.
He died on Monday evening. Mrs.
M'Kinley was committed to prison.
