THE SOUTHERN MAIL ROUTE.—The transportation of the mails on the important route between New Orleans and the northern cities has been conducted for a long time past in a manner which is really disgraceful to the General Post Office Department. Men of business know full well—although the Department, it would appear, has yet to learn it—the serious injury which is sustained by the trade of the country in consequence of these repeated irregularities, to excuse which no sound reason nor justifying cause exists. The New Orleans Bulletin of the 18th instant has a statement on the subject which discloses some curious facts. It says—the Mail failed yesterday at Montgomery, Ala. This is the fourth or fifth failure within a week. Indeed throughout the year according to the best calculation we can make, the great northern mail, for the daily transportation of which the Government contracts, does not arrive in this city with dates as late as due and from the whole route, more than twice and a half times a week, or five times in fourteen days.—Baltimore American.
