Catholic Union Leader
For NAACP Attack
New York. - George Meany's attack upon the NAACP because of its drive to rid trade unions of racial bias has been called "an attempt to justify the years of cruel neglect of the rights of Negro and other minority group workers within the labor movement."
This rebuke to the president of the AFL-CIO was administered by Daniel J. Schulder, president of the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists, in a statement made public on Nov. 10.
Addressing a banquet meeting here during the convention of the Negro American Labor Council the previous night, Mr. Meany blasted the NAACP and its labor secretary, Herbert Hill.
Misplaced Passion
"Had Mr. Meany displayed the passion which he used last night against Mr. Hill and the NAACP on behalf of racial justice within the labor movement during the decades of his leadership, there might not be need of a labor secretary of the NAACP," Mr. Schulder said.
Charges Bias In ILGWU
The ACTU, he added, "has direct knowledge of the conditions of Negro and Puerto Rican members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. We have found that such workers are allotted the lowest paying, least skilled work in the garment industry. With few exceptions they are denied entrance into the high paying, skilled jobs which are filled through ILGWU hiring halls. They, together with other members of the ILGWU, are denied democratic voice within their locals and within the International itself."
