NEW DELHI, India, (AP) --Expressing "intense concern" over reports the United States and Pakistan are negotiating a military agreement, Prime Minister Nehru said yesterday that such a pact would have "very far-reaching consequences."
Asked at a news conference about rumors the United States is considering furnishing arms to Pakistan in return for bases, Nehru said "things seem to have gone pretty far." He added he was surprised "this major development should take place in the way it apparently is taking place."
Nehru earlier had said India would consider American military aid to Pakistan an unfriendly act.
Pakistan, he said, "can have bases, foreign armies and anything it likes. It is open to it to give up its independence if it likes or limit it, but we are concerned with the consequences of these actions and watching developments with the greatest care."
