The More Abundant Life
(A Community Editorial)
It is September! The sweltering heat of summer is gradually and perceptibly given the form of cooling breezes that foretell the approach of autumn. Indian summer is but a few weeks away. There is a freshness and fragrance even in the drying leaves or the sharp frosty air that is soon to come. On the human side of the scale we see the children hurrying off to school, there to find new adventures and gain new experiences. Vacations for old and young have been drawing to a close. Club activities begin for the fall and coming winter. All this means that social and cultural life is to be made more abundant by activities - that enhance the values in neighborliness and fellowship.
In the business world there is no time quite so active as this time of the year. Fresh stocks of merchandise grace the shelves, inviting, helpful and suggestive. The joyous holiday season even now looms in the distance. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then the new year.
This is the time the heart takes on new courage. Even when the flowers wither and the grass dies away there arises in the human breast those noble impulses to carry on. The family circle takes on new significance as it is drawn closer together by autumn firesides. The radio -that invention that has brought the world's finest programs to palace and hut alike--is beginning to be at its best for broadcast and reception. Even the motor car picks up a new spark and takes on life in the clear and crispy air.
Those who work in store, office. home or on the farm are a little more active and alert. There is more to do and it is done with a will and a snap that brings results.
All of these things make possible the life that is more abundant, fuller, richer and more useful. Church, school, library, club, lodge, banquet hall, and social intercourse become more substantial, strong and enduring.
Would that all might share more of the blessings of the life more abundant. The task of society has been and always will be to equalize material comforts and opportunities for individual advancement as nearly as possible, consistent, of course, with the degree to which the individual contributes his talents and usefulness to society. A more practical idealism will hasten such fulfilment.
