Nanchi Isle, the upper anchor of Formosa's chain of outpost defenses.

Red occupation of the Taishans touched off a sea-air battle Friday in which Nationalist airmen said they sank a Red submarine while naval vessels sent 22 Communist surface ships to the bottom.

UNOCCUPIED BEFORE

The Taishans, which had been unoccupied by either side before Red amphibious troops landed there last week, lie 32 miles southwest of Nanchi which Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's forces have been ordered to defend at all costs, with or without American help.

Since their seizure of the Taishans, the Reds have been sending reinforcements, big guns and other equipment to the Isles in possible preparation for an invasion assault on Nanchi, 120 miles north of the Kingpin Nationalist island bastion of Formosa.

To check this flow of men and materials, the Nationalist Air Force launched a major assault on Red troops and shore installations as well as ship convoys en route to the Taishans from the nearby mainland.

Airmen returning from the Monday morning strikes said their bombs and rockets hit artillery posts and other targets, kindling huge fires.
