White Pine News, 16: John Scott and Levi Martin were out cutting poles for Alex. Muir, at Black Rock, some ten miles from Freeland's at Green Springs, three weeks ago. During a storm Scott and Martin got separated, the latter making his way to the ranch. For seven days and nights Scott circled around without fire or food, not even having a match, at night catching onto limbs and beating his feet against the trees to keep them from freezing. All this time Martin and others kept up a search for Scott, but it was not until the evening of the seventh day that they found him, almost famished and his feet badly frozen. A wagon was got and he was taken to Freeland's and kindly cared for. Since, he has been brought to Hamilton, and is now under treatment of Dr. Herick. One of his big toes had to be amputated, and it is believed he will be all right again soon. It seems almost a miracle how an old man like Scott could survive such long exposure and fasting at this inclement season.
