The Senator lashed out at McGrath, calling him a "political hack" and declared that "a man of unquestionable integrity and ability" should be given the Attorney Generalship. He suggested FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover as a possible candidate.
Nixon would not reveal who gave him the information upon which he based his prediction. But he said the same source had proved reliable in the case of the resignation of Democratic Chairman William Boyle.
Nixon explained his position on McGrath this way:
"No investigation (in the Justice Department Tax Division) by special prosecutors will be effective unless the President first fires McGrath. . . . .
"McGrath as Attorney General controls the FBI and other investigative units of the department.

is, so deeply involved with the individuals who must be the subjects of investigation that it would be impossible for him to cooperate honestly and fully with special prosecutors.
Nixon said it was his belief that if McGrath remains in office, "he'll be in a position to whitewash any activities affecting him or his friends" and that "the people will have no confidence whatever in any investigation unless he is first removed."
He then made his prediction that "before the first of the year the President will be forced to take action to remove McGrath from his position."
As for Snyder, Nixon said that he, too, should be fired and not allowed to resign, explaining: "He (The President) must make an example of them."
As Treasury Secretary, Snyder is in charge of the Internal Revenue Bureau, heart of the tax scandal.
