Full Text

The general court-martial lately held at the Horse-Guards, was on a complaint of Major-General Thomas, the Lieutenant-Colonel of the Second or Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards, against the Captains Stephens and Morgan, the two Adjutants of the said Regiment, for refusing to issue some orders received from the Lieutenant-Colonel. The gentlemen alleged in their defence, that they had consulted Lord Traylor, the commander of the Regiment, who was of opinion, that the said orders were unnecessary, and therefore desired they would pay no attention to them. Lord Traylor was present, and acknowledged that the Adjutants had his authority for their conduct, and spoke in very genteel and respectful terms of the two gentlemen both as officers and men. Colonel Thomas said, this question before the Court was, whether the Adjutants or Lieutenant-Colonel should command the Regiment? Lord Traylor replied in these words: "No, no, Major-General Thomas; the question before the court is not, whether the Lieutenant-Colonel or the Adjutants shall command the Regiment, but whether I, the Colonel, or you, the Lieutenant-Colonel, shall command?" The whole proceedings are ordered to be laid before his Majesty.

Event Details

The court-martial was on a complaint by Major-General Thomas, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Second or Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards, against Captains Stephens and Morgan, the Adjutants, for refusing to issue orders from the Lieutenant-Colonel. The Adjutants defended by saying they consulted Lord Traylor, the Regiment's commander, who deemed the orders unnecessary and advised ignoring them. Lord Traylor confirmed this and praised the Adjutants. Thomas framed it as Adjutants vs. Lieutenant-Colonel command; Traylor reframed as Colonel vs. Lieutenant-Colonel command.
