PORTLAND--The State fish commission will oppose the construction of the Priest River dam on the Columbia on the grounds that it will interfere with fish propagation.
Gov. Pierce was asked to have the state attorney general start injunction proceedings to prevent the construction of the dam, following agreement of the fish commissioners on such a program.
The commission takes the stand that no suitable fish ladder has yet been devised to carry fish over a dam 90 feet high, as projected.
Two-thirds of the spawning grounds for salmon in the Columbia River is above Priest Rapids.
The Oregon commission, therefore, contends that the salmon fishing industry of the Columbia-one of the great industries of the Pacific Northwest will be jeopardized if the proposed dam is built.
The dam would call for an expenditure of approximately $14,000,000, while the entire Priest Rapids project would cost nearly $50,000,000. It is being planned by the General Electric Co. for combined irrigation, reclamation and power development.
