WHAT GROUPS SHOULD OUR
CHILDREN BELONG TO?
By John Stuart Churchill for ANP

Children's organizations should be of vital importance to all parents. There are two types of children's organizations, those sponsored by adults and those organized by the children themselves. Those organizations which the children start themselves may turn out to be very harmful.

They are mostly the neighborhood gangs. Usually all of the children are of the same age, however, they do not necessarily come from the same type of homes. As a result we have some few parental restrictions and they are usually the leaders of the gang by virtue of the fact that they had more experience.

It is the underprivileged children who most often form the nucleus of the undesirable gang around an experienced leader. All children like to pretend to be cowboys, policemen, gangsters and other picturesque characters. This is the cause of some of the trouble. Children like the idea of adventure and soon make-believe adventure ceases to fascinate them so they look for actual thrills.

A child comes into the world with everything to learn, with so many gaps to bridge. They must have the experience, in fact they are so eager that if they are not guided properly, the result may be disaster. The first thrills may be innocent, unless parents can be awakened to the fact that they should take a part in it. If the parents supervise the organizations are: playground groups, recreation center groups, boy's camps, campfire groups, boy and girl scouts. These groups have a trained personnel and are better able to guide the child in wholesome recreation. There is a planned outlet for the excess energy that children usually have. Even in first class cities the playground facilities and general concern for child welfare is so organized that it often does not reach the children who are most in need of supervision. These are the children who are undernourished physically, mentally and emotionally.

You cannot be sure of what your son is doing, but may think that you have a very good check on your daughter, but rest assured that you do not know all that they are doing. It is your duty to see that the children in your community have supervised recreation. The responsibility of the future generation rests upon your shoulders.
