Clothing Was Topic For Young Homemakers Meeting

By GENEVIEVE AGEE

BUCKINGHAM, Dec. 13 - "Clothes that Satisfy" was the topic presented at the Young Homemakers Seventh Annual Convention Sectional meeting at Buckingham Central High School December 7.

The speaker, Mrs. Doris Cocke, homemaking teacher, Altavista High School, said it takes discipline and self-knowledge for a person to dress well. She further stated that in order to be well dressed on every occasion one needs to cultivate a number of fashion techniques. Some of the techniques cited were:

How to judge individually becoming colors and lines; how to plan a wardrobe that covers all your needs; how to co-ordinate colors and accessories; how to budget, so as to stretch your clothing dollars; how to shop successfully; how to separate tasteful from shoddy fashions; how to keep in step with fashion but not goose step, and what to wear when.

Without this information, one could own a closet full of clothes and still not have becoming or right things to wear. "But knowingly chosen, just a few clothes would enable one to appear attractively and suitably dressed at all times."

In order to obtain the desired appearance it is necessary to have a good foundation. Mrs. Cocke gave some tips for selection of foundation garments and lingerie.

The speaker emphasized the need for outside clothing to be youthful, simple, and active. The greatest barrier to fashion is the load of extra poundage too many women carry.

She further stated that "one cannot follow for fashion's sake and be attractively dressed." She illustrated this point by referring to the heavy winter coats with elbow-length sleeves the winter of 1961. "If it is cold, a coat should provide warmth," she stated.

The speaker further emphasized that there are no fashionable or unfashionable colors. In determining becomingness, colors and line are the basic considerations - what colors most flatter your coloring, and what lines in fashion best enhance your figure. In all fashion, no other element creates as much loveliness for you, as color.

The speaker illustrated the points emphasized in her talk by using Phyllis Lindsay, one of her students, to model a basic dress. She showed how a carefully selected basic dress could be worn around the clock by dressing it up or down with the proper accessories.

She stated that "wherever you go, the outfit you wear depends upon where you are going. Whatever you wear, it must be spotless and suitably accessorized."
