Sheriff Stewart Captures Jail Breaker

Word was received here yesterday that Sheriff Stewart had picked up at Lordsburg, N. M., Arthur Bennett, who was convicted here on a charge of bootlegging and was serving his sentence in the county jail, when he, and Bill Lee, another bootlegger, broke jail, Friday morning, April 19th, and left for parts unknown.

Sheriff Stewart was returning home in his auto, after delivering three deserters to the commanding officer at Camp Cody, when he run across Bennett in Lordsburg.

Sheriff Stewart returned this morning from Lordsburg without Bennett, the officers at Lordsburg refusing to give him up as he had only committed a misdemeanor when caught bootlegging, and breaking jail being only a misdemeanor, Bennett could not be extradited. So there you are.
