Original poetry.
Mr. Carter,
The following elegant lines, written by the late accomplished Mrs. Snow Ly. (relict of the late Mr. Seabury Soyle, merchant of Providence) you are requested to insert in your paper.--
Simplicity of the sentiments, and the strain of piety, reflect no less credit on the heart.

TO When fair Aurora gilds the eastern skies,
And miles away the darksome shades of night:
On her soft wing let pure devotion rise,
Warm as her breath, and rapid as her flight.
To Thee, Great Source of light, and life, and love,
Permit the young, th'unskilful notes to flow:
Oh! could I reach those blissful courts above,
Where seraphs' breasts with pure devotion glow
Then would I learn to imitate the train,
To mortal ears I'd bend the song sublime;
Song, such as echoes through th' ethereal plain,
Full fraught with holy joy, and love divine.
But man (though not permitted to explore
The secret glories of thy bright abode)
On earth may trace the footsteps of thy pow'r,
Confess thy presence, and adore his GOD.
Yon smiling orb, that o'er the humble earth,
Diffusing brightness, rolls his rapid way,
Father of Light, from Thee proclaims his birth,
Thee, glorious Author of eternal day.
And thou, wide Earth, with various blessings stor'd,
Our being to support, and love to raise
To nature's bounteous universal Lord,
Exhale to him the constant breath of praise:
Ye tuneful choir, that tremble on the spray,
Pour your soft hymns along the balmy gale,
While sprightly larks, that o'er the meadows
With cheerful beatings fill the echoing vale.
Ye finny tribes, which sport along the flood,
Of nature's praise your tuneful tribute yield,
While the rough herd, which range the distant wood,
Roar their loud homage through the neighb'ring field
Mortals, awake! to hear Nature's general voice:
Arise you to admire great Nature's God,
Whose gracious smiles diffuse celestial joys,
While worlds eternal wait his angry nod.
Of gratitude, high kindled in the soul,
Let man the hourly tribute raise:
And sound from east to west, from pole to pole,
One sacred song of universal praise.
JULIET.
