Full Text

The Superintendent of the Search Room, at the Public Record office, London, has discovered two deeds relating to the family history of Chaucer. These deeds are in Law Latin, and are easily read by one conversant with the Latin of the age. One has two broken seals attached: one seal bears the arms and a portion of the name of Geoffry Chaucer's father; no other seal of his has ever been discovered. The one deed relates to both parents of Geoffry; and the other mentions one Bartholomew as the second husband of Madame Chaucer. The dates show that the second marriage was contracted within twelve months of her first husband's death, and at the time the poet was about fourteen years of age.
