Oldest sport known to Atlantans is perhaps baseball. The game perhaps had its roots in sandlots, then took on an organized amateur hue, graduated into semi-pro and then patterned itself after the pros.

Baseball had to follow this route. Collegiate sports in 1910 were pretty crazy-quilt. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference grew out of a meeting at Morehouse College, on December 30, 1930.

Historians tell that the Atlanta Black Crackers, which followed the organization of the Southern Association Atlanta Crackers, was financed by white capital. In fact, John Harden, who had ownership of the team in the Forties, confesses that he purchased the club from a "Mack Shane." Parent ownership of the club is obscure.
