HAD TO RESIGN.
One Woman Forced Out of Office by Another's Friend.
Provo, Feb. 10.-The resignation of Mrs. Anna E. Hunter as matron of the county infirmary, which was reported in today's Herald, occasioned considerable surprise among her friends. It is now known that Mrs. Hunter is not to blame nor deserving of any credit for the surprise. The resignation was the result of pressure being brought to bear on the county commissioners in favor of Mrs. Stewart, president of the Woman's Republican club, who is an applicant for the office. A special meeting of the club was held Saturday evening, attended by some of the men who control the destiny of the Republican party, and at least two of the county commissioners, Messrs. Dixon and Dunn.
These commissioners were favorable to Mrs. Hunter, because of her efficiency in the past and because it has been accepted as a good theory to give county officers a second term when they have given satisfaction during the first term.
They were, however, made to see the necessity of making an exception in practice in the case of Mrs. Hunter, because the club wanted substantial recognition for party services and did not propose to wait two years for it.
When the result of the meeting was communicated to Mrs. Hunter her resignation was presented, and at the next meeting of the board Mrs. Stewart will receive the appointment as matron.
