Dolph's Little Scheme.—Readers will notice by the liberal extracts made from the Congressional Record that the Northern Pacific is making a desperate grab for the valuable coal fields of Puyallup in Washington Territory. Mr. Dolph was forced to show his hand, and did so with ill grace, plainly indicating that he was in favor of the steal. Van Wyck's resolution, which is printed on the first page, was eminently just. It could do the company no harm if they should really show that they were entitled to the lands. Yet the Republicans voted almost solidly against it, and Dolph voted with the rest. Only four Republicans voted aye, and not a Democrat voted no. There is a deeper reason for this than the general one that the Republicans are serving the interests of the railroad rather than those of the people. This is that favorable consideration of any of these just measures which are warmly advocated by Senator Slater would render him more popular and conduce to his re-election, and this they wish to prevent. They also fear that action upon these matters would injure some of their Presidential timber.—East Oregonian.
