Full Text

The passage of the bill respecting our District Banks will, it is presumed, be very acceptable to those who are interested in them, and indeed to the whole community, every member of which must have felt more or less interest in the prevention of the universal desolation which would have ensued a refusal to renew their charters. The charters of all the existing Banks are extended for fifteen years, with the exception of the Mechanics' Bank of Alexandria, not noticed in the bill, and the Central Bank of Georgetown, which is now honorably winding up its affairs. The Union Bank of Alexandria and the Potomac Bank are allowed to consolidate their funds into one institution. We wish there had been more such intermarriages. The bill contains a provision that any other two or more banks may unite on the same principles. After the first day of January next, no bank is to be allowed to make, issue, or re-issue any notes of a lower denomination than three dollars. This bill requires only the signature of the President to become a law.

We ought not to pass without remark the good feeling towards the District, which distinctly marked the proceedings of the house yesterday on this subject.
