The banquet of the Lincoln chamber of commerce last week suddenly precipitated headlines in the newspapers outside of the Capital City and rudely confronted many members of the legislature with hostile public sentiment.
The legislators, more than a hundred, responded to the invitation of the club. During the evening Mark Woods launched an attack against house members who had voted against Missouri river navigation a few days before.
No sooner had the nervous promoters of the banquet put the soft pedal on Mark, than a newspaper man discovered a hundred unemployed gathered before the building and the advance guard silently climbing the stairs. Police were called and the men held on the street until they were dispersed. A committee gained audience with Senator McCarter, who promised an investigation.
This incident following the outburst of Mark Woods made real news. The accounts of the entertainment of the legislators blossomed forth everywhere. It was front page stuff.
Newspaper reporters proved to be good sports. So far there has been no list of the guests printed in any paper. But the solons are gun shy of free feeds in Lincoln.
