The old country people are better haters than we Americans. The Yankees will fight all day, then go to bed together at night. Blues and grays would even slip over the lines to tipple and play poker with one another during the night of the rebellion. Then they would shake hands in "good-bye" and put for their opposing regiments to join the fight!
But France never forgets. Conquered by Germany, she was never subdued; nor will she cease to hate the nation that tore from her fair Alsace and Lorraine, a rival power which dared to despoil the glory of Paris even to endanger the tomb of Napoleon.
But above Haut-Rhine and Bas-Rhine, Moselle and Metz, towers the $1,000,000,000 provided for by the Franco-German treaty of 1871.
These nations are likely yet to fight to the bitter end.
