Full Text

Desperate Fight.

On last Wednesday evening, while a negro man with his wife were near Trevillian's station, about five miles above Louisa C. H., they were overtaken by three negro men named Perkins, who proceeded to beat Robinson to the best of their ability. He was thrown down, and beaten with stones and sticks, until by the aid of his wife he could free himself and obtain a stick. He then did his best with the stick, but he received severe injuries, having his head cut open and his body frightfully mangled. Nevertheless he split open one of his opponent's skulls with his stick. His wife picked up a stone lying in the road, of quite large dimensions, and by a well-directed blow levelled one of the assaulters with the ground. Dr. Barrett, who happened to be riding that way, came up to the scene just as the fighting had ceased. He says the woman was lying on the ground with her head split open and bleeding badly. He says the woman may die. The other two men are seriously hurt. Robinson obtained a warrant for the arrest of the Perkinses, but they were released on habeas corpus.
