Every mail from Washington brings intelligence of a nature, which most powerfully illustrates the truth of what Mr. Fessenden has said of our democratic rulers.
"You rogues! you rogues! you're all found out,
And, we the people, I've no doubt,
Will put a period to your dashing,
And honest men will come in fashion."
The talents of the administration (says the editor of the U.S. Gazette) and of the legislature, which at the commencement of the session we fondly flattered ourselves would be sedulously devoted to the extrication of this country from the difficulties into which she has been plunged by the weakness and folly of our public measures, seem now to have no other object than mutual detection and recrimination. Those who have heretofore had the lead in our public affairs are now exclusively employed, each one in endeavouring to ward off the indignation of the country from himself and direct it to his neighbour. I am much mistaken if it does not ultimately fall upon all, with a weight which their feeble shoulders will not be able to sustain.
