A writer in your last Gazette, under the signature of "A friend to justice," was pleased to say, he had always held Gov. Gilman in the highest respect until he gave his approving signature to the Bank restraining act, when he had reason to withdraw that respect.
I would wish to ask Mr. "Friend to justice," if he would not have formed a much more unfavorable opinion of that worthy gentleman, if he had withheld his signature, when he thought it his duty to have given it? you will recollect it has always been held up to public view, that this Bank was set on foot solely from Political views, to revolutionize this state, and change the present happy form of government, we now so highly enjoy, in a total Democracy.
Now Mr. "Friend to justice," if Gov. Gilman thought this really the case, (which I am well assured he did) it became him! it would have become you, and every Citizen of New-Hampshire to have exerted all the powers & energy they were masters of, to have crushed, in its infancy, so hellish a plot!
But further, Mr, "Friend to justice," I still have reason to think, you have not yet sufficient cause to alter your former high opinion of, and respect for the worthy Governor Gilman, for there is not that person on earth that can come forward, with one well founded charge against his public or private character! and can you say this of any other candidate brought forward to your view?
And further, I am well assured, that Gov. Gilman would be one of the first to support a Bill in favor of incorporating the N. Hampshire Union Bank, at the next session of the General Court, provided he is convinced, that the Bank was established from any other, than political motives! Therefore, let me entreat you, to shew yourself a man of more stability than to be whirled about with the flimsiest Democratic clamor of the day, and come forward at the approaching election and support the man who is worthy your confidence, and who is the steady, firm Patriot, and supporter of your rights, as well as redresser of your grievances. I mean the Hon. JOHN T. GILMAN, Esq. for your Governor; and at the same time give your supporting energy to JOSEPH BLANCHARD, for your Counsellor, THOMAS LEAVITT, for your Senator, OLIVER PEABODY, for your Treasurer, and NATHANIEL PARKER, for your Recorder of Deeds,—And thus you will convince the world you mean to be the supporter of our present happy form of Government, and not an instrument of turning our liberty into licentiousness, and making it a curse, instead of a blessing to the rising generation.
