School Board Trustee, Wm. Hatchett
COLP, Ill.-An integrated Colp District grade school opened on August 26, according to William Hatchett, member of District 29 Board of School Trustees.
Hatchett said this week that only one of the two school buildings would be used but that no final decision had been made as to which one.
The school trustees voted on May 17 to consolidate the all-white Standard school and the all-Negro Attucks school into one with full integration of students and teachers.
White residents of the district petitioned the Williamson County Board of School Trustees for permission to detach a part of the district and annex it to the neighboring all-white Carterville district.
The petition was granted but the Colp board with the support of the NAACP has appealed the decision to the Williamson County Circuit court. No date has been set for a hearing on the appeal.
District School Superintendent Archibald Mosley said that pre-registration figures indicate that 106 pupils will be enrolled.
Last year Attucks had 62 pupils and Standard had 45.
