Full Text
The body of John Dougherty, an Irishman employed on the farm of Mr. J. B. Bassinger at Denville, was found lying dead near the depot at Morris Plains on Wednesday morning of last week, under suspicious circumstances. Upon examination, scratches were discovered on his face and nose, and a gash on the back part of his head, and it was at first supposed he had been lying on or near the track, and been struck by the engine of the freight train and killed. A pool of blood was, however, subsequently discovered by the side of the public road, about a third of a mile from the depot, and drops of blood were noticed every few feet between. An examination of the case was commenced, and it was ascertained that deceased and a companion named John Coleman, also in the employ of Bassinger, were in Morristown on election day, that they started for home together, and subsequently parted. A suspicion of murder has therefore been raised, but it is generally believed that the death of deceased was caused by injuries from a fall, while intoxicated.
