CHRISTIANSTADT (in St. Croix) April 28.

By a Gentleman arrived from Antigua we learn that a Ship from Dublin for Philadelphia, having put into Antigua through Stress of Weather, amongst other Passengers who landed was a certain supposed Adventurer, calling himself Captain Price, and attended by two Servants. This Person frequenting some of the second-rate Taverns, had a Bill bought for his and Servants Expences, of which he, scrupbling to pay some Article, was arrested; but by some Means finding that the Publican had not the proper License for retailing of Liquors, he brought Information against him, and had him condemned in the Fine, of which our Captain had Half, thereby paid his Bill, and put Money into his Pocket. Finding this likely to turn out a good Trade for him, he declared he had on his List forty more Punch Sellers, under the same Predicament. This bringing a general Odium upon him, he was pointed at as an Informer; and some People proposed to punish him with the modern Manner of Savage-making, Tar and Feathers. This was attempted one Night, and the House wherein he was surrounded; but the Captain found Means to withdraw, and getting through a Prickly Pear Fence, deemed impassable, he sought Refuge in the House of a Clergyman, who, dreading a Mob, was conducting him to the Guard, when they were met by a great Number of People, some with Bludgeons, a Blow from one of which overturned the Clergyman's Hat, and felled the unhappy Price to the Earth, from which, taken up speechless, and carried to the Hospital, he expired in two Days. The Coroner's Inquest sat on the Body, and brought in their Verdict wilful Murder; Since which four suspected Persons are committed to Jail, and the Hue and Cry gone out after Several others.
