WHIG SPECULATIONS
The following sage speculations, from a Whig paper in New York, are worthy of note:
"In the progress of the Whig party to full power, they must put in practice the principles of their opponents—unconditional party despotism over all their fragments. A National Convention will determine their candidate for President;—that candidate will be Henry Clay, Webster indeed is the next highest—for we have always taken Harrison to be a pis aller, never meant to be seriously used. The contest of 1840 will be between Clay and Van Buren, Van Buren and Calhoun will be united. The contest may be decided in favor of Clay: and after that, Calhoun and Webster will be the opposing forces." What will the friends of General Harrison say to this view of the case?
