Full Text

To the fifteen wise men of Bentonville.—Gentlemen, you have thought proper, in your arch-see-ing wisdom, to undertake the important task of enlightening the 'Banner' upon the feelings of the democracy of this section of the State, in relation to the late Democratic convention. And further, you assume to yourselves the right of stating, that which is only known to ourselves and the authors, that the several communications which appeared in our paper, purporting to be written by democrats, were the outpourings of 'Eagle-eyed Whigs' for the purpose of dividing the party.

We who probably are as well informed upon these subjects, take the liberty of stating that you may have declared 'honestly and fairly' the sentiments of that portion of the party who work in harness, regardless of who may be the driver, but you did not express the feelings and views of the unbought and independent democracy for whom you assume to speak.

The authors of several communications, who you are pleased to call 'Eagle-eyed Whigs,' are genuine democrats who are of and with the party.

We should not have been induced to notice your communication, if it had not have been that we drew down upon our humble heads the ire of so distinguished and powerful a clique, for acting true to our motto to 'Let every Freeman speak his thoughts,' for having the independence to preserve our neutrality so far as to let every party have a hearing, for which our neutrality is attacked; and the faithful are made to understand that we do not deserve and must not receive their patronage.

Overwhelmed as we are by the dicta of your potent body, we must inform you that even the fear of your displeasure cannot harness us—that we will remain neutral and independent through the whole of the coming canvass.

We should be happy to be informed by some of you the exact views and sentiments of your kin relative to calling a new Convention.

We are well informed upon the subject relative to the late Convention, and have only to say let the 'Banner' and the party be influenced by your declaration and not listen to those 'Eagle-eyed Whigs' of the 'Intelligencer' and the result in October will tell who are true to their party.
