Another Case of Alleged Use of the Mails for Fraudulent Purposes.
D. V. Diamond, who was brought here from Portland, Oregon, on Monday last, charged with using the mails for fraudulent purposes, was before Commissioner Greenman this morning.
The Commissioner held court in the Federal Court rooms. Diamond had just served a nine months' sentence at Portland for using the mails for fraudulent purposes. H. Bouford, the real estate man in the O'Hara building, was arrested on Monday also.
The complaint on which both men were arrested was sworn to on July 28th by Postoffice Inspector Lawrence, charging them with using the mails for fraudulent purposes in connection with the alleged fraudulent association known as the Salt Lake Fraternal Accident association, organized in Salt Lake City, June 20th, 1892.
Commissioner Greenman opened the case about 11 a. m. today. C. S. Varian prosecuted on the part of the government.
Miss Jennie Bouford was the first witness called. She is the daughter of Bouford, one of the defendants, and was engaged in the office of the association, as a sort of clerk or writer. Her principal business was to write out policies. She was on the stand the whole forenoon and gave evidence in relation to the business as conducted by Diamond and Bouford. She identified a number of papers, circulars and other documents as being at one time used in connection with the alleged fraudulent association.
The case is being continued this afternoon. A host of witnesses are in attendance.
