Sermonette

By Rev. John McGinn

The Lord's Prayer contains and effects an incomparable plan for individual happiness and for world order. The program begins to operate on the day you recite the prayer with complete sincerity.

"OUR". Only the generous can recite it; only those who have banished self-seeking and who strive for genuine brotherhood with all mankind, healing divisions made by differences in creed, color, or nationality.

"FATHER". Though He is omnipotent and has claims upon us that we cannot ignore with impunity. He is above all a Father who delights to care tenderly for the children He has begotten.

"HALLOWED". Develop a reverent heart and a mind that bows easily before majesty and mystery. This word is a daily antidote against cynicism, flippancy and the pride that precedes all our falls.

"THY KINGDOM COME" Crusading? Evangelistic? Certainly! And what's wrong with furthering the ideals and interests of Christ? The cause of anti-Christ is well served. Shall Christians alone be the inarticulate and cowardly?

"THY WILL". Not my will, nor any man's. We've tried them and failed. God has a plan for me and for the world. Why consult second-rate architects?

"GIVE US". There's no dishonor in acknowledging dependence on your Father. What is dishonorable (and foolish) is to employ His gifts in building a habitation from which His love and wisdom are exiled.

"FORGIVE US". Pharisees and those whose relations with God and man need no improvement can skip this. But troubled hearts and uneasy consciences gratefully and confidently frame this necessary apology to the Father of Mercies. For the Christ who composed this prayer, is the Saviour who died on a cross.

"AS WE FORGIVE". The measure of our compassion is the measure of our pardon. Fight for justice, not for revenge. And the true peacemakers are those who forgive and forget.

"LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION". The spiritual life of every man and of the race have their disastrous Pearl Harbor defeats. And they too are often born of spiritual neglect, carelessness and complacency.
