Event Details
Ferdinand VII sent Franciscan Friars from Apostolical Colleges as missionaries throughout Spain to influence people affected by the late revolution. Some friars wear beards, others called Fernandines do not. In a town twelve leagues from Madrid, a friar preached from the pulpit that the late Constitution was heretical, jacobinical, and destructive of religion and morality. Audience members coughed in response until a tall whiskered muleteer interrupted, saying the friar should preach the Gospel, not politics. The audience rose, the friar fled through the sacristy to the Curate's house and over the garden wall. The people set fire to the Curate's house upon finding him gone.
