Senator Elton Engstrom of Engstrom Bros., Southeast Alaska fish buyers, gave the old fire gong a resounding smack this week, to the tune of $100 to help buy that jeep pumper the Volunteer Fire Department has an opportunity to get at low cost and which the town so badly needs.
"Having read the Periscope of last week, enclosed one hundred dollars for the Volunteer Fire Department and a mighty worthy cause," writes Senator Engstrom in our message of the week.

Up to today, the fire fighters have $385 in their fund for the jeep pumper, cost of which will be $825, or 15 per cent of the actual cost. Through Civilian Defense the Territory bears 15 per cent of the expense and the federal government the balance.
Councilman George Smith, local Civilian Defense Chairman, reported this week that he had been advised the pumper would be available shortly.
Four hundred and forty dollars to go.
Monday evening, the fire eaters are having a game party at the Fire Hall. It's all for the pumper, so be on hand.
Remember those flames licking around the fateful evening of March 21-22?
Fire Fighters to Give Party at Fire Hall Monday
Fire Chief W. D. Grant announced this week that the Volunteer Fire Department will hold a game party Monday evening at the Fire Hall with the object of raising some money toward buying the new jeep pumper.
"We have $385 now in the bank for the pumper fund," the Fire Chief reported, "and we hope to make our goal of $825 before too long.
"That hundred dollars from our old friend Elton Engstrom was a real lift and we are mighty grateful to our former fellow townsman.
"We hope everybody will turn out for the party."
