Full Text
Governor W. Kerr Scott is ex-officio chairman by law, administers the affairs of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, State College at Raleigh and Woman's College at Greensboro.
And a merry scramble is on the Board. Members are elected among the legislators for places eight-year terms.
Young has written personal letters to every member of the 1951 General Assembly asking each to support Senator Young for one of the 25 vacancies so as to give Harnett County representation on the board of trustees.
These letters will be laid on the desks of the senators and representatives tonight when the Senate and House convene at 8 p. m.
WANTS REPRESENTATION
"I hope Bob will be among those selected as trustees," said Representative Gregory. "He is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina and I think Harnett should be recognized by having one of its residents on the board."
In addition to terms of the 25 trustees that expire by law on April 1 after the end of the eight-year terms to which they were named by the 1943 Legislature, there are two more vacancies. One is that occasioned by the sudden death of W. Roy Hampton of Plymouth, whose term does not expire until April 1, 1953, and that of W. Luther Hodges, Leaksville-Spray industrialist, who has, under the law, forfeited his trusteeship by failing to attend a meeting of the board during the past two years. Hodges has been absent much of the time during the past two years assisting Robert M. Hanes of Winston-Salem in helping administer the American economic aid program to backward European countries under the Marshall Plan.
Only excuses allowed for non-attendance at board meetings are for members serving in the nation's armed forces.
