WASHINGTON, D. C. - A total of 442 colored farm managers in the South will produce record crops this year, according to the U. S. department of agriculture.
These managers have charge of 242,000 acres of land valued at more than $12,000,000 according to a statement released last week by the agriculture department. They are directing the production of thousands of bales of cotton, millions of pounds of tobacco, many hundreds of tons of peanuts, and thousands of head of livestock.
Typical of the colored farm managers is Charles J. Strong, who supervises a 2,000 acre section of a plantation near Greenwood, Miss. He expects to harvest more than 1,000 bales of cotton-25 per cent more than last year. Also, he is shooting for 16,000 bushels of corn and 6,000 bushels of soybeans.
Strong has been a manager on the O. F. Bledsoe plantation for 12 years and supervises the entire operation of the 2,000 acre tract. There are two other managers on the place, both white, who handle similar acreage.
