Full Text

Sheriff Croke, of St. Francois county arrived here on the excursion train Sunday noon from Bismarck in search of two men who were suspected of having robbed the safe and shot the proprietor of a saloon in Claytown the night before. (The details of the robbery are printed elsewhere reproduced from the Globe-Democrat.) Sheriff Croke had learned at Bismarck that the two men had left Bismarck on a south-bound freight that morning. Sheriff Marshall joined Sheriff Croke here and the two at once boarded a freight train for the south. At Hogan they learned that the men they were seeking had passed through there about eleven o'clock. Proceeding south they ascertained that the two men had passed Glover at four o'clock. Here, though, all trace of the men were lost and they disappeared as completely as if the earth had swallowed them. All that night the two sheriffs and their deputies practically scoured the track between here and Piedmont but they could secure no information of the men wanted. Sheriff Marshall and Ben Leff were going south on No. 9 Sunday night and they saw two men board the blind baggage at Annapolis, that they were certain were the fugitives. They were taken in custody at Des Arc, but an investigation quickly revealed that they were not the men wanted. Sheriff Croke gave up the search here and returned home Monday. The opinion is that the robbers have left the railroad and are traveling through the woods.
