The Davenport correspondent of the Chicago Press & Tribune who styles himself "Brutus," speaking of the probable candidates for the Governorship, says "Lowe will most likely be nominated by the Republicans, although Hiram Price, of Scott county, will be a strong competitor for the nomination." We cannot say that we believe that Mr. Price has any idea whatever of being nominated for the office of Governor. We have always been led to imagine that he was not an office seeker, and cares not a farthing to leave his position as a private citizen even for the highest office in the gift of the people. His natural modesty and well known diffidence in political matters, is to us sufficient proof that he would not permit his name to be used in any such connection.
It is true that Mr. Price did wish to get into the City Council in the late spring election, but was defeated in what was undoubtedly a Republican Ward. Should he be prevailed upon "for the sake of the party," to have his name go before the people, there would be the prettiest chance in the world to defeat him and elect a Democratic Governor by a good round majority.
We wish the Republicans would nominate King Hiram.
Who is "Brutus!" We never heard any talk or hint that friend Price wanted the nomination. Brutus must be a very intimate friend of his.
