Full Text

ILLINOIS.

The Democrats have carried the State. According to the best returns, Catlin has beat Edwards (Whig) as Governor, and Anderson (V. B.) has beat Davidson for Lieutenant Governor. Reynolds (V. B.) is elected to Congress by a handsome majority, and Casey is re-elected. The 3d Congressional District is a very large one, covering 38 counties—of which, returns have been received in whole or in part from all but Calhoun, DeKalb, Whitesides and Iroquois counties. One of the Whig papers states the returns so far to be for Stuart (Whig) 12,010, Douglas (Dem.) 11,847—but the majority in Kane is put down at only 170, when another return makes it 470. Making this correction, Douglas has 12,157—being a present majority of 177.—The Albany Argus publishes a letter from Chicago, which says, returns had been received from all the counties but 4, and that Douglas was then 800 ahead; and that the counties to come in would increase his majority. Time will test this matter. The Whigs may not yet have given up the Legislature.

Event Details

Democrats carried Illinois state elections. Best returns show Catlin beating Whig Edwards for Governor, Anderson (V. B.) beating Davidson for Lieutenant Governor. Reynolds (V. B.) elected to Congress by handsome majority, Casey re-elected. 3d Congressional District covers 38 counties, returns from all but four (Calhoun, DeKalb, Whitesides, Iroquois). Whig paper reports Stuart 12,010 to Douglas 11,847, but corrected Kane majority gives Douglas 12,157 to Stuart's 12,010 (Douglas ahead by 177). Chicago letter in Albany Argus says Douglas 800 ahead with four counties left, expected to increase majority. Time will test; Whigs may not have given up Legislature.
