"We have already noticed the fact that the southern section of the State was losing thousands of citizens every month. because of the low rate of fare charged by the Sacramento steamboats. A large majority of the passengers now arriving from the eastern States, as well as from China & Chili, having but little money, take passage for Sacramento, because the fare is 50 cts.while the Stockton boats charge $5. Will some of our Stockton merchants use their influence with the captains in our trade, who have the power to remedy this evil?"
