Growers Are Advised About Packing Wool

Growers who market wool as original bag wool can increase their returns several cents a pound by removing the off-wools during shipping and packing them in separate bags. Chairman R. J. McKenna of the Production and Marketing Administration state committee said this week in discussing the USDA's current wool price support program.

For wool to qualify as original bag wool under the 1953 shorn wool price support program, it must be sufficiently uniform in grade and length to be readily merchantable. Handlers must certify that the offs (black, gray, buck, burry, and seedy, dead, rings of tags, crutchings, etc.) have been removed.

Clips that do not fully meet these specifications will be discounted by the appraisers and may even be required to be graded before a non-recourse loan will be made on the wool by CCC.

Growers, McKenna emphasized, should clearly label the bags containing off wool so that handlers will know the offs have been removed during shearing and can make the certification required by CCC for original bag wools.
