Full Text

"The Kentucky Advertiser blames the President and Secretary of State, because Congress did not pass a law appointing superintendents of Ohio river. It is absurd to suppose a wish to influence Congress on this subject—it is anti-republican to suppose Congress could be so influenced and an attempt to influence is apt to produce the opposite of what is wished."

We copy the above paragraph from the Boston Palladium. The statement, that we blamed "the President and Secretary of State because Congress did not pass a law appointing superintendents of Ohio river," is not only false, but ridiculous. We complained, that the selection of Mr. M'Kee, as superintendent of the improvement of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, was a bad one; and, because the appointment was neither authorized by law, nor by the constitution. We did not allege that the executive attempted to influence Congress on this subject. On the contrary, our remarks went to show that the President resolved to manage the business, independent of Congress.

The Kentucky Advertiser responds to the Boston Palladium's misinterpretation, clarifying that it criticized the unauthorized and poor selection of Mr. M'Kee as superintendent for improving the Ohio and Mississippi rivers by the President, independent of Congress, rather than blaming the executive for Congress's inaction on a related law.
