FROM THE NEW-YORK STATESMAN.
THE MEETING OF THE WATERS.
Hark! the signal gun along the skies is roaring!
And blue Erie's wave through the mountain ridge is pouring!
And sounds of triumph float
From the loud cannon's throat,
To where bright Hudson's wave in its broad green vale is flowing!
And proud Manhattan's spires in other skies are glowing!
Proud the star-spangled banner in the breeze is flying!
But not o'er crimson'd fields, where ambition's sons are dying!
No scenes of grief appal
Hearts on this festival.
But on the winds a million voices swelling
A grateful people's joy, and o'erflowing hearts are telling.
Here are no abject slaves for diadem'd tyrants toiling,
To heaven for vengeance on their oppressors calling;
But free as winds that blow
O'er ocean's depths below,
The patriot freemen, toil and danger spurning,
Brought to the mighty work a heart with ardour burning!
Clinton! around thy brow fame twines her wreath of glory,
And long thy patriot deeds shall live in song and story!
Though malice rears her head,
And envy wakes the dead
They bright shall flourish, while Niagara's volumes
Rear to the skies their rainbow'd, cloud-capt columns!
Hail, patriot band! while the lakes and seas are meeting,
From a son of song accept this heart-felt greeting;
A nation's blessings wait,
On those who've bound the state
In chains of interest, bright as our native fountains;
Grand as our cataracts, lasting as our mountains.
