EXTRACTS OF LETTERS.

Lima, Aug. 5.--Gen. San Martin suddenly departed in brig Macedonian, and some are of opinion he will never return. [This was probably his departure on a friendly visit to Bolivar, at Guayaquil.] He took with him considerable specie. The country is in the utmost confusion. The royal army is in the vicinity of Lima, about 16,000 strong, and the Patriot troops are much disaffected. The Americans have heretofore been treated very roughly, but since the arrival of the Franklin the Patriots appear better disposed. Capts. Pitch and Smith, of Boston, are now here and will probably recover their property by the interposition of Com. Stewart. The American vessels now in port, are the Franklin 74, sloop Diphn, ship Esther of Boston, Chauncey of Balt. where bound not determined. Ship Panther has touched at Lima and sailed again. Brig Pearl left Valparaiso May 22, having put in in distress. Flour is in good demand in Lima, retailing for $50 per bbl. The Patriots have no hopes of holding Lima a great length of time. A squadron sailed from Callao a short time previous to San Martin's departure, where bound could not learn, but generally supposed for Africa.

Lima, Aug. 12.--A French frigate has just arr. from Valparaiso. Several small Peruvian vessels have arrived, but they bring no news of the Macedonian. It is very pleasing to see the national vessels displaying their flags here, viz. American, English and French, of which Commodore Stewart's is the largest or flag ship. This place is still held by the patriots; but the general opinion is it will soon fall into the hands of the royalists, as the patriots appear indisposed towards the government which has been established by San Martin, who is very unpopular, which has given rise to the report of his having absconded; how this is, time will determine.
